Rio Ferdinand wants a banner honouring his Twitter account displayed inside Old Trafford.

Stretford End Flags, the group behind the 34 years and 20LEGEND banners in the Stretford End, approached Ferdinand via the social networking site for ideas for a new flag.

And, tongue in cheek, the United defender said he had only one thing in mind when it came to the ideal addition - a banner of his Twitter account handle, @rioferdy5.

Ferdinand tweeted: "My Stretford End banner : 'rioferdy5' has to up there."

Ferdinand has more than 313,000 followers on Twitter, including Bolton striker Kevin Davies, golfer Lee Westwood and comedian James Corden.

During the summer, Ferdinand admitted he had become addicted to Twitter - which lets users post comments of up to 140 characters - after keeping fans updated about the injury that ruled him out of the World Cup.

Recent tweets have included 'Becks will be knighted within a year' and 'Listen tweeps, love him or hate him Sir Alex Ferguson is the BEST to ever do it (manage)'.

Earlier this season, he also used the site to comment on the Wayne Rooney contract saga, posting 'It was never in doubt tweeps, wazza is Man Utd through and through - there's no way I could have seen him playing for another club, defo not another prem club anyway'.

By 'behind', presumably they mean 'copied after the originals were removed by their owners'. @#%&!s.

Does the MEN have any £#%&!ing clue what actually goes on in their city? ffs.
