Liverpool are doing the same with bringing in Jay Spearing to be player / coach for their under 23 side

Basically we’ve been so awful, anything the club does gets ridiculed

I don't think he's a coach in a playing sense. He's more a mentor who has been through some stuff himself and can help them that way. McShane was similar. "Hey I'm a guy never really made it, you can also not make it and it won't be the end of your life."
