England were abysmal against France and the standard of the tournament, generally, should be higher. That’s not sexism. You won’t find Messi-like talent lurking at Leyton Orient; or Leicester City either; or in the school team. Men’s football is allowed to be lousy. And when we have genuine equality, women’s will, too.

The BBC seems to specialise in this asinine cheerleading.

Jenny Jones won bronze in the slopestyle and two professional broadcasters burst into tears, while the expert summariser had her microphone switched off for cheering when a rival fell. The Women’s World Cup is not dissimilar. ‘The England team has just arrived to a big cheer, from me,’ one correspondent told Radio 5 Live. Imagine Alan Green saying the same of Roy Hodgson’s lot.
