Looking at the ESPN 30 / 30 doc called Broke I'd imagine making bad investments with so called mates would be high on the list

Made 10m after tax, divorce cost him 3, spent the rest over 20 year career. Probably made the typical footballer bad investments (restaurants, nightclubs, shady real estate), got swindled on a business deal or two, and just spent too much on cars, houses, friends, etc. They never put their money in the right things, because the right things are boring.

20m isn't that much once tax and women are taken off

buying 7 properties (at a high level presumably) would leave you well in the red if a few went bad

Seen that meself, some of the figures for the numbers that do go broke were mind blowing.

Although I do have some sympathy with the view that if you're earning millions to start with losing them by trying to make more millions through investments rather than just sticking it in the £#%&!ing bank is sort of your own fault.
