what has SOP ever done in Europe to make people spin this line out about how we'd have been better with him?

he was shit in Europe at Blackburn, at Newcastle he did very little - their best ever game was against Barcelona at home (3-2) probably, and he didn't even play, and the best football I ever saw England play during his time was against Italy at Le Tournoi when Wrong and Cole were in our attack, Shearer was dropped, and Scholes was able to run the show. You could make a case for the Holland game at Wembley I suppose, but Sheringham and Ince were the main men that night.

Shearer was a great finisher, but there's nothing in his history or in United's European history to say we'd have been better with him in the side. The missing link that won us the Treble was Dwight Yorke, and he was far and away a cleverer and more skillful player than Shearer could ever dream of being. The season before we ran riot in the group stages and then got hit by injuries. The year before that we made the semi-finals and were unlucky to go out. And the year before that we didn't even qualify for the CL.

Andy Cole is still the all-time Premiership top scorer from open play.

agree with that. Any side Shearer has been with has had him as the focal point and apart from one season with Blackburn it has been to the detriment of the team and even then am sure we would have had one more point except for a bit of kung fu. Ian Wright was the same and to a certain extent Ruud as well.

Default What about

Batistuta to us in the late 1990s ?

Del Piero at various times as well.

Were we ever close to getting either player ? I think that they would have fitted in well.
