Default Substitute Rules

Evolution over time:

Seasons Subs allowed
1888-1965 None
1965-87 One
1987-92 Two
1992-94 Choose two from three
1994-96 Three
1996-2019 Choose three from five
2019-20 Choose three from seven (August to March)
2019-20 Choose five from nine (June to July)
2020-22 Choose three from seven (from nine from Dec 2020)
2022-23 Choose five from nine

Back to 5 from 9 this season. Should help ETH figure out who's worth keeping.

Should be 2 + keeper. Makes it harder for clubs to stockpile players if they’re not even making the bench

Thumbs down

Ridiculous change.

Could literally finish the game with half a different outfield team to the one that started.

The 3 from 5 rule did not need changing.

Great. Cant wait to see teams making extra individual subs towards the end of a game to waste time.

Have we got 9 players to bench? 3 or 4 CB’s a keeper, 2 FB’s a CM and a forward if no one is injured or suspended.

Can only make your subs in 3 stoppages apparently (half time as well) but, yeah, it's shit.

Honestly I don’t even include him when I’m talking about options at this point

Getting close :

Everton supporter Paul Stratton was brought on to take a penalty in a friendly match against Dynamo Kyiv.

He has been delivering supplies by car to refugees of the Russian invasion in Ukraine

5 subs is surely giving the advantage to the big clubs.

It also lends itself to City stock piling players as they can keep more of them happier if they can bring 5 of them on….
