There’s just something fundamentally ‘so what’ about city. It’s because they’ve spent the past fifty years banging on about how much they hate us. When a club so fundamentally defines itself on the basis of what they are not rather than what they are they don’t amount to anything of substance.
They used to kid themselves that anyone gave a £#%&! about them because they were loveable little city. But the only attention they got was on the occassions the ABU nation, in which they had a comfortable spot, noticed that little city had beaten big bad united in a derby, or when they performed some of their inadvertent comedy stylings. They didn’t realise united losing not city winning was the news story. Who were they other than the hapless neighbours of a footballing giant? A convenient underdog to get behind in the hope we’d drop points.
Now they’re in the limelight thanks to the oil money everyone can see them for what they are. A characterless, unglamorous club, who got lucky and bought success rather than earned it. Leicester with money. Much less interesting as theyre not even plucky underdogs, but the strangely needy beneficiary of bottomless pit of cash. The traditional bitterness reinforced after all those years of united hating irrelevance by the realisation that this shortcut to success has ensured that no one really cares about them.
There’s no recent history of any kind of important rivalry with anyone else. Even now everyone would rather city beat their more immediate rivals. They might have a great team but there’s no kudos beating them. Aside from us no one scans the fixtures looking for when they play city.
They thought they got everything they ever wanted. They’ve been accused of becoming everything they ever hated, but in a sense they couldn’t even become that. Because despite the money, and the transfers, and the trophies, ultimately no one gives a £#%&! about a bunch of weirdos that exist entirely even in their own minds happier to just get one over on united.
