In theory, yes. As with communism the reality doesn't always live up to the dream, however.

This is a good point as I watched FC away at Chorley a couple of years ago.

£9 to get in
3pm kick off on a Saturday afternoon
A decent pint in the Chorley FC club before, during and after the match
Sanding on terraces behind the goal
Good banter and atmosphere on a cold Saturday afternoon

Felt like football again

So mentioning them in this thread was, theoretically, relevant

I lived in an ex-communist country, on and off, for a decade and I tell you what, there's a lot of people who said life was much better back then. Makes you think...

Money is probably slowly ruining the game at the top end. Not because there's too much of it or because players are being paid more than ever, but because it's all concentrated in small pockets and the financial imbalance is taking the intrigue out of the sport.

The Bundesliga is a formality. Ligue 1 is a formality. Serie A is a shell of formerly great clubs most of which are now on the periphery of the game. La Liga has six games per season that really matter. Even the Champions League is reduced to a 3-team tournament now.

The entire footballing world centres on a handful of clubs and a couple of leagues in Europe. Little else can compare and as a result it feels like little else matters, be it the Europa League, a historical giant like Ajax or the stripped carcass of South America. But when most of the best footballers in the world are concentrated at a select few clubs, and their clout renders their matches little more than them routinely crushing mismatched opposition on a weekly basis, where's the allure?

For all English football lacks stability, ideas and consistency, at least it still retains some intrigue. That's lacking everywhere else.
