Carrick in a back 5 without using wing backs, for me is the best way to go.
541.
With the players we have in midfield and falcao upfront we could still play attacking football but with a bit more assurance at the back.

3-5-2 without using wing-backs would be far better

when the side midfielders push on a dm drops in and the wide centreback covers the space outside him. the whole thing needs to be built around possession though and this lot are nowhere near well-drilled enough yet

lvg has to adapt his plans to accommodate the ball being turned over cheaply more often than he'll have ever seen before at a top club he's worked at

Carrick dropping back from Midfield to cover for Raf or Shaw surely is the easiest implementation of that idea.

Either way, carrick being a ball carrying/ playing centre half, the 4 in midfield as a 4 at all times. We defend as a 5.

Did well there against them at Upton Park last season.

And we may not have anyone else. He's probably better there than Smalling, as tragic as that is.
