Angry Ferie Out!

Fergie backs Manchester congestion charge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

from the guardian

The Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, today gave his backing to a proposed congestion charge in the city, which he said would bring in billions of pounds to improve public transport.

In a letter to the Manchester Evening News, Ferguson said the plans "offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Greater Manchester in the premier league for public transport - so don't score an own goal".

The 1.9 million residents of the Great Manchester region have been invited to vote on the plans in a postal referendum. Ferguson is not allowed to take part because he lives in Cheshire.

Under the scheme, motorists would pay up to £5 a day on weekdays to drive into and out of Manchester city centre.

The region's 10 councils would receive £2.8bn from the government's transport innovation fund to set up the scheme and pay for public transport improvements. This would include £318m to set up the peak-hour, weekday charge.

Of the total figure, £1.2bn would be a loan to be paid back over 30 years out of the profits from the charge.

The result of the referendum will be announced on December 12.
Ferguson said in his letter: "After the football itself, the comfort and safety of supporters is paramount for all clubs and their managers. Millions of journeys are made by fans each year to watch their club play both home and away.

"Every season we are hosts to visiting fans ... Most of these visitors use public transport to get to our stadiums and we want their visit to be a good advert for the region. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression."

He concluded: "Vote yes for safe, fast and convenient match-day travel and make sure all Greater Manchester people get the public transport they need and deserve. That's why I am saying yes to this campaign."

Did he mention anything about any icebergs?

As has already been said, he's on £4M, drives a Bentley and will never catch a bus again. When he starts using public transport, I'll listen to him telling me I should.

why should motorists pay for up-grading public transport? It's a bizarre concept. The people who actually use the trams should pay for it surely??

spot on fergie. should be linked to ability to pay and pollution though - a fraction of the market value of the car multiplied by a figure based on emissions would do it. that way the rich pay relatively more (plus a @#%&! tax in the form of a surcharge for spoilers, alloys and those @#%&!ty speakers that fill an entire boot), while if you have zero emissions you pay £#%&! all.

meanwhile, back in the real world there is £#%&! all chance that the money raised will genuinely be used to improve public transport. it will be used to cut the budget and redirect money 'saved' elsewhere. ho hum.

A fraction? How about 17.5% of the price of the car when it's new? As for emissions, charge them an annual fee for using the car and charge that according to emissions. When we have this, will you be satisfied and let public transport pay for it's own upgrades?

By now you've probably realised we pay VAT on new cars and an annual car tax based on emissions before we even put the petrol in that's 80% tax. They've run out of ways to charge the motorist so they're inventing new ones.

Next they'll link it into the NHS and say that X millions are spent each year treating accident victims and charge us again. Then we'll pay because the day has a Y in it. It's a pissing joke.

what a despicable slug he is. i had the misfortune to catch 10 mins of that class program the other week. can't recall the exact details, but this old bloke asked him a tricky question about some govt policy or other and the @#%&! got all defensive. the old guy follows it up calmly with another searching question and prescott starts shouting at him accusing him of turning it into an slanging match. he can't even debate with a pensioner without acting the @#%&!.

the idea is to make the idiots who sit in traffic jams clogging up the world decide whether they want to pay more to be a lemming or whether they want to get off their lazy £#%&!ing arses and stop being so selfish

we've all breathed in enough shit that it doesn't really matter to us. but think of the children ffs

this is a plea on behalf of the future of humankind

though I'm not sure our genes are really worth trying to save

well yours, anyway...
