Ahem…

Also, I’m not against signing better players in any position. But they’ve got to be materially better if you’re going to drop £50m on them and at the same time drop your multi times player of the season in the shit. At the time, I was like fair enough, this will be a step change for us.

I guess I was right. A goalkeeper who jumps like a dog into water. That kind of step change.

Absolute worst case scenario, we concede a couple more but are overall more solid and less nervous and can actually play out from the back and start quick attacks.

What’s not to like
About that worst case scenario…

He was obsessed by just how much de Gea was holding us back. Went on about it for years whilst de Gea was regularly our best player and then towards the end gained proper forum wide pile on traction against de Gea.

A new keeper would instantly improve us - regularly create attacks and provide assists…

We’ll just look at us now!

he is notably better and more confident than de gea with the ball at his feet. we were constantly in trouble last year when trying to play out from the back.

of course the irony is that egghead has now decided to tell the keeper to play long, which de gea would have been perfectly capable of doing

I’m not a fan but on the other hand it’s a bit of a stretch to blame him for us not being able to play out from the back. That would require the defenders in front of him to be able to make themselves available to receive the ball, to be able to control it when they did receive it, to be able to select a pass to a team mate who is not under pressure (preferably before they got the ball, but certainly within the first 30 seconds after receiving it) and then executing that pass.

You don't even need to worry about putting it in the corner to beat him, just don't hit it straight at him.

Horrific goalkeeper.

His shite distribution got us in trouble at least three times.

He’s not the biggest worry but needs to get much better.

He's a top guy, very likeable. Would be great if he could stop passing to the opposition a couple of times a game.

Reckon he'll be brilliant next season if we can sort what's in front of him out, and he's a bit more used to the tempo of the Premier League when he's got the ball on the feet.

Very flakey first season but I actually have a bit of faith about this guy.

He's never going to have the shot stopping capability of dave, but I think he'll be solid enough and as patty says he'll be more used to the tempo etc. and the strengths of his game will start to shine through. Far from writing him off just yet.

Either that or I just want him to do well cos he seems like a top lad

Watching the 99 doc & seeing Schmeichel toss in multiple goals in that £#%&!ing season made me feel a bit sorry for Onana. First year with us, he really has tried quite badly to get booted but I also kinda like him - there appears to be a huge level of improvement in him & if he could just £#%&!ing speed up his distribution and not chucking them in his own net he'd be fine. At least for another year. But some of the mistakes have been disastrous. He's almost entirely responsible for CL exit - takes some doing that over a entire group stage

Watching the route to the final again, he did make some pretty crucial saves. That one from Nunez when 2-1 down to Liverpool for example. Would have been game (and season) over.

certainly talks a good game. I hope he succeeds, we can't afford to write him off.

the slow distribution is surely what he's being instructed to do, I wouldn't blame him for that

I'd totally forgotten how many £#%&! ups Schmeichel did that season.

This docu series is the best thing that could have happened to Onana.

I think he comes across well and he’s got something about him. Bit of personality and doesn’t hide…. I just worry he doesn’t do the basics well enough. He’s too easy to beat and his footwork is £#%&!ing awful.

In his defence, he’s been horribly exposed. More so than any other keeper in any other season. All while coming into the one of the most scrutinised positions in world football.

He has improved and deserves more time.

He's made some great saves in the league... Huge character, not afraid to punch through a crowd.....
Clean sheets
Kept us in games
Reason were in a cup final ..

We all know the start he had.....

But the improvement on de gea is ten fold, his ceiling is higher also.....
