After them going in the lead and the raising of the arm™ I could almost hear him praise himself deep inside his maniac-mansion-sized-head:
"I just Mourinho'd Villa! No, even better...I Rodgered them! I'm such a smuck genius! They must love me! Hold on, where's the camera? Ok, now pretend you haven't seen it. Put the serious, smart face on...like on that great painting of me hanging at home. They'll love it. I can't wait to get home and listen to Hayseed Dixie's 'Wish I Was You'..." |

This is why you don't sit there giving it the big 'un about legacies and attempting to lace every sentence with an historic soundbite before you have actually achieved something of note.
Getting to a certain level with a team is only half the story, then you have to bottle it, protect it and replicate it, otherwise it ends up being a fluke. I have never seen a manager do such a poor job of the second bit, ever. Last year was worrying, they were playing magnificently in the middle half, yet look what's happened since. Lost their best player, the one who made almost everything tick, their talisman and captain is a hollow shell who gave everything he had left and came up short domestically and internationally, and now gets mocked every game, by everyone. Sturridge is a crock, Sterling believed the press, and they bought abysmally. Now we are in the ascendency again, they must be in absolute purgatory. Couldn't have choreographed it any better if I were God himself. |
