The clear signals as far back as late June, when conversations with the Brazil midfielder’s representatives first began, were that he was eager to leave Real Madrid for United.

And that interest did not waver even as the weeks passed and the player waited patiently in the background while the club maintained their protracted pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.

But the Brentford defeat, coming only six days after an opening 2-1 loss at home to Brighton, was so bad that there were concerns in some quarters it might be enough to convince Casemiro to back away. They need not have worried.

Casemiro, it turned out, was watching from home in Madrid and began sending messages to his agent saying: “Tell them I’ll fix this”.
Can’t be right, we were panicked in to buying him after losing two games

They speak to lots of players reps they never have any intention of buying pal. We’re just lucky he was open to it and they had somewhere to turn when they panicked. £#%&! knows what we would’ve ended up with otherwise.

No, I never rated him at all good or bad until I’d seen him play

It's just easier to hold your hands up and say you were wrong on this one ?

Dunk only believes leaks or briefings that confirm what he wants to believe.

The article literally says we’d been keeping Cas warm for weeks, as FDJ was Erik’s number one target. We then decided to give up on De Jong, and finalised the Big Dog. Some of us had been saying this all along because of the quickness we wrapped the Casemiro deal up, it clearly had been in the planning for a while.

Let’s just pretend we panicked after one loss though

Isn’t that what you’re doing by believing this one?

Duckers is usually spot on, clearly has some good sources. I haven’t seen any briefings/leaks that contradict this version of events anyway, but if you have feel free to share. It was obvious to anyone looking at things in an unbiased way that Casemiro wasn’t a panic buy.

I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.

The Athletic did an in depth article on recruitment the other day that references a meeting after Brighton during which all transfer directions changed.

Panic buy isn’t fair, they’d done their work on him, but they weren’t going to buy him until it went to shit and everyone started protesting.

Again, the owners panicked and sanctioned the spend after it went to shit early doors. The scouting department and even Murtough etc. had found a willing alternative to FDJ in Casemiro. We win those opening 2 games and the ‘pursuit’ of FDJ would’ve continued until the window closed at the expense of any other move, imo.

The same meeting is referenced in this article.

“ United would have pushed the button sooner on Casemiro had Ten Hag not hung on as long as he did for De Jong. So long, in fact, that it was only in a big recruitment meeting in the days before the Brentford game that the decision was taken to finally abandon the pursuit of the Barcelona midfielder, park interest in the likes of Adrien Rabiot and land Casemiro.

United had been keeping Casemiro warm for over six weeks although it was made clear during that period that, if the purse strings had permitted it, the manager would have brought in both the Brazilian and De Jong. Real’s loss has most certainly been United’s gain”

You’re wrong on this one pal.

Really? Or a club brief pushing the onus onto the manager and away from the budget constraints?

Again, you believe what makes you happy, I’ll believe what fits the owners M.O.
