Nope.

Best shot stopper in the world for a period of time, but as the game has moved on it’s completely passed him by. He’s not even that good of a shot stopper anymore.

We should have moved on from him a couple of years ago at least.

He was United's goalkeeper for 12 years. Whether he made some mistakes or couldn't dribble past strikers is largely irrelevant. He was brilliant many many times and the clubs player of the year a number of times. He's a United legend.

He was player of the year because we were so shit no one else deserved it....

The poll contradicts.. how can you be the best in the world for a while but not a legend? Was Van der sar the best in the world whilst at United?

Yes. One bright spark in several seasons of absolute dirge; player-of-the-season through FA Cup/UEFA Cup/League Cup wins + big part of 1 & almost 2 title wins.

That said - he should have been sold when Madrid came knocking instead of being signed to a suicidal contract on the club's part through his physical & mental deterioration. Sullied the good memories.

Final emblematic remnant of transition from savvy latter Gill/Fergie era to the financial profligacy & shit-on-a-stick football that has accompanied it in pre-ETH years.

Why is it contradictory? Ronaldo was the best in the world while at the club but it doesn't make him a legend

Exactly. Longevity in and of itself does not convey legendary status.

Not quite up there with Schmeichel or VDS and clearly wanted out at one stage. Also been a liability at times this last few years, which further tarnished his status in my eyes. A truly world class stopper of shots, though, and deserves his place at a nearby table, but sat among the legends? Nah.

By being the best in the world for 1 year out of 12.

How many of our club legends were best in the world at the time? Not many. Cantona is a club legend. Was never the best player in the world.

(I also don’t think DDG has actually been the best keeper in the world at any point either btw)

Yep.
It’s not even a concrete term but if he’s voted the player of the season about 5/12 years.. that would be a pretty good indication that he is? It’s easy to be fickle.

One of David’s most iconic moments…for all of the wrong reasons. Absolutely scared shitless.
