Only guess I have is they left it late thinking United would accept a lower offer, which they did. Only thing they didn't bargain on was Navas not being keen and basically scuppering the whole deal, because of the time spent haggling over his terms and contract.

But they would surely have known that if they didn't sign him this summer, he would sign a new deal with United, and therefore no free transfer.

Anyone thinks he isn't going to real for a world record fee (for a keeper) either next summer or the one after is mental.

I suspect Madrid's priorities will lie elsewhere (possibly Pogba)

If Navas has a good season then there's going to no media or fan pressure to sign De Gea and Madrid aren't the type of club that want to spend huge money on a goalkeeper

All it means is we get a transfer fee next summer.

It means we get 12 months of one of the best keepers in the world and it will end up costing united nothing should we get a fee next summer.

I doubt Madrid will buy him now anyway. They didn't want to pay £20 million for him this summer, and the fans wanted Navas anyway. And it looks like de gea isn't going with Madrid's plan b where they wanted him to see out his contract. If Navas has a good season, they're not coming back in for him. It will be barca now if he goes back to Spain.

I guarantee they'll pay the world record and rightly so. I'm glad sense prevailed and the people thought us paying 50million plus de gea for ramos are disappointed.
