Shearer was the one I really wanted here. As a kid I really wanted Lineker; he would have scored loads.

Lineker had just left Barcelona, and explained in an interview with FourFourTwo that a move to Spurs looked like it was set to fall through.

"Right at the 11th hour it suddenly appeared that Spurs might not be able to do the deal, financially," his answer read. "That's when my agent spoke with Alex Ferguson, who was keen to take me to Old Trafford.

It was close to being done, but then Tottenham came back and said they could do it. You have to remember that the Manchester United of 1989 weren't the Manchester United of four or five years later."
And this about 1985:

I don’t remember the 2nd time; I was talking about the speculation prior to the Everton move. I think we bought Peter Davenport instead. That worked out well.

Far and away the biggest football transfer disappointment.

Just to see a season of Shearer and Cantona together.

Dunno about that, let's just say they were both immense in their prime.

And to give the monotone Geordie his due, he did want to come here in 1996 and was by all accounts gutted that Jack Walker vetoed it.

I'd imagine we'd of won at least two more Champions Leagues if he'd have signed.

Complete centre forward.

The Diego Forlan years suggest otherwise .

Fairly sure that Shearer would have bagged more than 10 over 4 years

edit : just checked and he scored 69 with a £#%&! Newcastle over the same period .

Wonder how an extra 59 goals might have helped

(And i was a Cole fanboy back in the day)

Imagine Shearer and Cantona up front with the best Midfield quartet in the world behind them.
