The splitting, angled balls he kept playing to both Evra and Rafael set the tone of the game. Liverpool's wide players were very reluctant to get forward after he cut them out of the game a few times.

I was thinking something along the lines of "Carrick on the fields of London, Carrick on the fields of Birmingham..."

Then I realised it was a bit shit so I stopped.

Showed his weakness again when he had to dominate the midfield. We'll be £#%&!ed once we come up against a strong midfield but luckily there doesn't appear to be one in Europe.

He was until he had to hold the midfield together when Cleverley and Kagawa were £#%&!ed. Then he looked a little bit suspect. Not blaming him I think it just highlights the fact we need to add a 90 minute box to box midfielder to allow Carrick to do what he does best.

Thought he was absolutely brilliant yesterday. As Grimmers said, the angled passes he hit yesterday in behind Sterling and Downing were sheer class. All along the deck too and he not only finds feet but plays the pass at a pace which makes it easy for the receiving player to control it or take the ball on the move without breaking stride. He hit one from the right side of the centre circle into Evra's feet which was sublime.

I've been one of his harshest critics since May '09 but on form he is a terrific footballer.

Lost it for a few minutes in the second half, but was mostly excellent. Enjoying his best football for about four years.

He's been tremendous for 18 months, he's just getting a bit of recognition for it now..
