CARLOS DEAL CAN KEEP RON
MANCHESTER UNITED must persuade Carlos Queiroz to stay at Old Trafford to keep Cristiano Ronaldo. Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man is on the point of quitting United to coach the Portuguese national team. And that, according to sources in Lisbon, could be the catalyst that sends Portugal star Ronaldo to Real Madrid. Ronaldo, 23, has refused to commit himself to United, repeatedly saying his future will be decided after Euro 2008. It is also an open secret that he wants to play for Real, one day, and that the Spanish champions will make him the highest-paid star on earth. But if Ronaldo is wavering over his loyalty to United, the departure of fellow countryman Queiroz could tip the balance against Old Trafford. Queiroz, Fergie’s trusted No.2, is disillusioned because he hasn’t been assured he will succeed Ferguson as United manager. Fergie has publicly praised Queiroz, giving him much credit for his tactical and organisational input into United’s successes in the past two years. But Queiroz is disappointed, to say the least, that the United hierarchy have not told him he will succeed Ferguson, 66, who is expected to retire before he turns 70. Starsport revealed in April that Portugal had offered Queiroz their top job, in the event of Big Phil Scolari leaving after Euro 2008. Chelsea-bound Scolari is now on his way – and Queiroz, who is a massive influence on Ronaldo at United, likes the idea of coaching his national team. A sticking point, and potential plus for United, is that Portugal have not offered Queiroz as good a contract as Scolari. One move that would make Queiroz turn his back on his country is an assurance from chief executive David Gill that he will become United’s next manager. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/...-can-keep-Ron/ |

Real waiting for Ronaldo to make first move
MADRID (Reuters) - Real Madrid say they are waiting for Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo to make the first move that would allow them to start negotiations with Manchester United over a possible transfer. The Spanish champions have made little secret of their admiration for the player but have been warned off encouraging him to breach his contract by world soccer's governing body FIFA, following a complaint from United. "We are waiting for Ronaldo to say something, and as soon as he says he wants to play for Real Madrid there will be conversations between the two clubs," Real's director general of the presidency Miguel Angel Arroyo was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Thursday. "We would willingly reach an agreement with Manchester United if it is possible, that is to say, if they want to sell and if the price was affordable." Ronaldo has said he will not speak about his future until after the tournament. Real are not planning to make major changes to the squad but their interest in Ronaldo and Euro 2008 are making it difficult to complete their dealings. They have been linked with a move for Valencia's Spain striker David Villa and, if Ronaldo comes, the sale of Brazil forward Robinho, with Manchester United and Chelsea reportedly interested. "Things are a little dependent on what happens at Euro 2008. There is a lot of speculation but that is normal," Real coach Bernd Schuster told Spanish radio station Cope. "I have already said there will be very few new faces." http://uk.reuters.com/article/footba...80619?rpc=401& |
